SustainAqua – “Integrated approach for a sustainable and healthy freshwater aquaculture” is a
Collective Research project funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme that started in September 2006 and will last 3 years. During this time the consortium of 23 partners from 12 different countries will carry out specific research, training and dissemination activities in the field of producing healthy and tasty freshwater fish and other economical valuable by-products mainly by optimising nutrient chains, water management and energy efficiency.
In Collective Research projects RTD performers like research centres and universities carry out research activities on behalf of Industrial Associations or Groupings (IAGs) in order to expand their knowledge base and improve the overall competitiveness of large communities of their members which are almost Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In the project 7 RTD performers will provide the required know-how in cooperation with the participating 10 IAGs and the SME core group consisting of 6 enterprises from different European countries. The gained knowledge will be the base for certain IAG training activities about sustainable freshwater aquaculture management contributing to spread the knowledge throughout Europe.
